“The debut EP from Durham’s grimmest new death/doom act Enshroudment, »As The Light Is Extinguished« is reigniting the decrepit gloom of the North with a decidedly old school take on a genre that is often too swampy or too clean and gleaming.

The opening title track feels like it has crawled from the recording sessions for Winter’s classic »Into Darkness«. The pace is torturously slow, the bleak cold melody is straight from classic Paradise Lost records, and the growls are almost coherent in their miserable incantations. »Choirs Of The Forlorn« is a violin away from being a My Dying Bride gem in places, teasing morosely majestic guitars through a sodden atmosphere of sombre mist.

Durham may be a number of miles north of the bleak Yorkshire moors, but Enshroudment definitely feels born of this stark, grim northern beauty. »As The Light Is Extinguished« is an old school delight; an enthralling crawl along the trails of Thergothon and early Anathema until we find the grey windswept coast, and throw ourselves off the cliffs.
