After a short break we continue with this interview series… It seems that my body can’t stand that much alcohol anymore 😀

Are you ready for some epileptic awesomeness from Ljubljana, Slovenia?

The Canyon Observer has always been intrigued by free forms and tried to accommodate that into our working method. The willingness to dive into the unknown, to trust each other enough to let go. The risk of failure that comes with this kind of musical expression is important and fulfilling and gives as more room for musical development.

TCO’s latest, avant-garde driven album »Figura« was released on January 9th, 2023 via Kapa Records. The album features some guest musicians providing extended soundscape with additional instruments such as alto saxophone, baritone saxophone, two cellos and additional drum set.

Can you say a few words about your band?
Matic: Hard to describe what we’re going through now, but maybe like a trailer: A seasoned sludge band gone off the rails when they start an affair with some jazzy modern people. Chaos ensues.

What was the biggest challenge for the band this year?
Matic: To be honest, we were very lazy this year and the biggest challenge is to get this huge team together for rehearsals. Bunch of lazy fucks.
Nik: Just to be clear, we (TCO) are the lazy fucks, not the people we’re collaborating with.

What can you be most proud of this year?
Matic: I think we are all proud of the new album »Figura« that came out this year. Got some positive reactions from that album and is giving us drive to motor on and explore outside of the genre a bit more.
Nik: We’ve connected with amazing individuals to collaborate with, and we have a deep affection for them. I think we’re embarking on an exhilarating journey together.

What was your biggest regret?
Matic: We had some plans to do an EP but it didn’t happen, maybe next year. Maybe we just record and never release or maybe we just release but never record, who knows.
Nik: We most certainly don’t.

What was the best concert/tour this year and why?
Matic: Shows this year were sparse, but the best one this year was definitely at Vojsko. Just a small intimate show, beautiful people and a big fucking fire at the end. Just can’t beat those vibes.
Nik: Vojsko <3

What was the biggest surprise on the music scene for you?
Matic: A bunch of weird stuff is coming out. I like it.
Nik: I don’t know if these are surprises but I really enjoyed: Smedja in Smetke – »Smetobolje«, Jolted – »The Joy You Bring«, Propad – »Propad« and I guess a million other stuff that I can’t remember right now because I’m at work and I should be working..

Where can we see you live next year (concerts/tours)?
Nik: We don’t have any plans at the moment. As usual.

What are your plans for the next year as a band? What do you personally want the most?
Matic: Personally I would love to start exercising more and eating healthier, because we are getting older.
The amount of baldness and grey hair in the band now is just stupid.
The band should also start being healthier. Maybe quit smoking? Maybe practice more? Go for a fucking walk!?
Nik: As a band we are again embarking on a path we know nothing about. But this is a topic for another time.

How can people best support your band?
Matic: Buy our merch and come to our shows, maybe send some pet pics in our inbox for the vibez.

Do you have any message for your listeners?
Nik: Make sure to look after yourself!
