Doomed Confessionary: Mitsos (Kidney Black)

Kidney Black is a four-piece rock band with grungy sounds and punk attitude hailing from Athens, Greece.
Kidney Black was formed in late 2019 against the backdrop of an urban landscape that would soon change in ways none of us could have imagined. Drawing influences from their previous bands (The Earthbound, Semen Of The Sun, The Raindogs) and taking grunge, post-punk, and heavy music as their reference point, they forged their own rhythmic, melodic, and dangerous soundscape.
In August 2021, they released their first demo EP, »Lychnopolis Sessions«. Featuring six tracks recorded live at the studio of the same name, it captures the raw and early essence of the band. The following year, four of these tracks were recorded and filmed live in the same space for the show »Rooftop Jam Sessions«.
After hitting the stage with bands like New Model Army, 1000mods, Drunk Jackals and more they continued working on new material. In early 2025, the band returned to studio to record their debut album, »Urban Decay«. The album contains 12 tracks, mixed and produced by Nikos Chalkousis and Kidney Black, with mastering by Vasilis Lagos at Entasis Studio. »Urban Decay« was released on September 8th, 2025 via The Lab Records.
Can you please say a few words about your band?
Kidney Black are Panos on drums, Niki on rhythm guitars and vocals, Zouglas on lead guitars and Mitsos on bass. We were formed in the B.C. (Before coronavirus) era as a jamming group of friends with mutual love to riffy music and rocking beats.
What was the biggest challenge for the band?
Trying to escape police control to rehearse through Covid quarantine and staying true to our principles through an era of transglobal ethic pulverization.
What can you be most proud of so far?
We are surely proud for achieving our goal to record this album, plus remaining humans and supporting people in need.
What was your biggest regret?
I would say maybe working on fresh ideas for our next release.
What was the best concert/tour so far and why?
We haven’t toured a lot yet, but our best gig so far was a live we participated with sole purpose collecting money to aid Palestine.
What was the biggest surprise on the music scene for you?
The revival of genuinely 80’s like screaming punk/hardcore, especially female fronted, even more if you think that is kind of mainstream today.
What is currently in your heavy musical rotation?
Bands that never left, Sabbath, Priest, Maiden and new entries like Gojira, Las Hormiguitas, Idles.
What was the best advice you’ve ever been given as a musician?
Metronome is your friend, you should walk side by side, don’t let him go in front of you, don’t leave him behind.

What are your guilty pleasures?
Anything that contains meat (and as a side cheese).
Can you say something more about the current music scene in Greece?
Our scene here in Greece makes waveforms, sometimes a lot of bands come forward, sometimes less, never a flatline, always something happening. Some bands make it abroad with flying colours, others stay inland not to ruin the careers of foreign bands, ’cause we are the best.
Where can we see you live this year (concerts/tours)?
On the 7th of November we are giving a live gig for the release of our album in AN club in Exarcheia, Athens. For sure we will be touring in cities of Greece to promote the new album, but haven’t scheduled anything abroad so far.
What are your plans for the future as a band?
We are not the kind of band that puts pressure on ourselves, the only plan we have is to record a new album in one, one and a half years span.
How can people best support your band?
Come to the gigs, buy our merch and when we don’t play that good, tell the truth.
Do you have any message for your listeners?
Sleep well, eat well and always drink with a full stomach. Thank you all.
