Doomed Confessionary: Tristán & Joan (Primate Matriarca)

Primate Matriarca is a two-piece sludge/stoner metal band hailing from Alicante, Spain. The power duo consists of Tristán Rico (drums, vocals) and Joan Lorenzo (guitar, vocals).
The surprising discoveries from an archaeological site in Foia de Castalla, recovered using a new technique known as paleophony, have allowed the extraction of latent sound material in fossil remains dating back 40,000 to 50,000 years. After analysis, this material has been transcribed into musical language, which will be performed by a stoner metal duo Primate Matriarca.
Can you please say a few words about your band?
We’re a sludge duo from Alicante. Our songs are transcriptions of 50,000-year-old fossilized sound material, influenced by (limestone and easterly storms?). I’ll send you a couple of links. I thought you might like them.
What was the biggest challenge for the band?
We’ve been with the band for two and a half years, so far our biggest challenge is getting gigs and making ourselves known.
What can you be most proud of so far?
We’re just two people in the band, and we do everything without outside help. Recordings, management, videos… DIY.
What was your biggest regret?
Turning down a gig with interesting bands when we were new, because our guitarist felt insecure about some songs.
What was the best concert/tour so far and why?
We are in a phase in which we are increasingly affirming our sound and leaving our proposal more and more defined, so the last concert is the best.
What is currently in your heavy musical rotation?
High On Fire is a group to which we always return and it is a referent. And lastly we listened a lot to a Spanish group that we love called “Al final solo habrá cenizas”.
What was the best advice you’ve ever been given as a musician?
Enjoy the process.
What are your guilty pleasures?
We are thinking of making a version of »El Venao« (Caribbean music) for a compilation of bands from our city.
Can you say something more about the current music scene in Alicante?
There is a small community with very good bands although there are not many rooms to play because mainstream music generally predominates.
Where can we see you live this year (concerts/tours)?
Last Saturday we played in Alicante. Now we are about to close three possible concerts for 2026 that make us very excited.
What are your plans for the future as a band?
We are just finishing recording an EP of three songs that will be called »Orce y Galera« and when we publish it our objective is to promote it so that we can play as many concerts as possible.
How can people best support your band?
Listen to our music on Bandcamp, follow our YouTube video account, and come to our concerts.
Do you have any message for your listeners?
Our music needs to be heard as loudly as possible.
