Oslo-based sludge-metal power trio Sâver are back with a vengeance. »From Ember And Rust«, the band’s first non-collaborative release since 2019, is out now via Berlin’s Pelagic Records.
Album opener »Formless« serves as a gloriously brutal statement of intent; weaving all the experiences of the intervening years into the hypnotic riffs and pounding drums that form the heart of Sâver’s formidable synth-driven, sludge-metal sound and set a relentless pace for the rest of the record.
Whilst »From Ember And Rust« is only Sâver’s second album under their own name alone, over their relatively short existence the band have earned a reputation as frequent and forward-thinking collaborators. Restless by nature, 2021’s full-length concept EP »Emerald« saw Sâver pair their calculated minimalism with the frenetic, percussive energy of Belgian post-metal collective Psychonaut whilst last year’s split EP saw Sâver and Norwegian folk singer/songwriter Frødekal reinterpret a song from each other’s back catalogue with hauntingly spectacular results.

With this revelatory experience still ringing in their ears, »From Ember And Rust« bears all of Sâver’s heavy hallmarks alongside a newfound sense of dynamic anticipation and organic progression, born in part from the patience and perseverance necessary to overcome the necessary restrictions of the past few years. Another byproduct of the pandemic is the rekindling of Sâver’s shared passion for the dystopian soundscapes of classic science fiction.
Already a key component of the trio’s distinctive sound; guitarist, singer and synth player Ole Ulvik Rokseth’s otherworldly, cinematic synth work appropriately pervades every corner of the new album. From the brief choral respite amidst the crushing onslaught of »I, Evaporate« to the lingering drones that haunt album closer »All In Disarray«, »From Ember And Rust« is Sâver boldly taking their first steps into a world that is familiar yet also forever changed, outfitted with enough cutting-edge heavy metal to flatten anyone, or anything, that gets in their way.
Sâver on »Formless«: “As the beginning of a narrative, »Formless« employs a reverse chronology approach – it encapsulates the plot for the rest of the tracks within the first song. The Object is depicted in all its glory, radiating hope and the warm glow of embered light, yet ultimately revealing how it consumes you with rust and dismantles you. It leaves you in reflection, longing for the former life you once sought to replace.”
»From Ember And Rust« is out now.
