Coilguns (Switzerland) are releasing today the new single/clip »Nightshifter«, a first B-Side issued from the same recording sessions as their fourth album, »Odd Love« (released in November 2024).

This extract is the first one to be released from a two-track EP, »Lost Love«, a pair of songs that were considered too dark for the »Odd Love« album. The »Lost Love« EP will be released on September 26th on Humus Records on vinyl & digital (Preorder: https://humus-records.com/shop/product-tag/coilguns/). This frozen-tempo, low-tuned angst-drenched track shows Coilguns at their saddest. The track was recorded & mixed by Scott Evans (Kowloon Walled City), mastered by Magnus Lindberg (Cult Of Luna).

About »Nightshifter«:

This frozen-tempo, low-tuned angst-drenched track shows Coilguns at their saddest. They share their experience of the archetypal downside of life as a touring musician: returning home alone and tired after weeks on the road, losing sight of the meaning of it all.Like many of their peers, they are familiar with the toll that a career in a band takes on personal lives, relationships, and health. Despite its hopeless vibe, this song is intended as a way to exorcise and accept this aspect of their fate, allowing them to move forward. A kind of prophylactic catharsis to help them to keep focusing on what matters most: keeping the band rolling.Carefully produced by Californian engineer and musician Scott Evans (Kowloon Walled City), these four minutes of noise are a perfect example of what Evans’s own “Sad Dude Core” recipe is good for: draining the pain away.

As singer Louis Jucker says:”Anyone who has been on tour has experienced this at least once: the tour is over, it’s late at night, you’re standing in front of your apartment door trying to find your keys in a bag full of stench. No one’s home and your fridge is empty, except maybe for that poor limp carrot you forgot there when you left. Better wine a bit, embrace the despair, sleep a bit, do your laundry and start writing new songs.”

Track written, arranged and produced by Coilguns, recorded by Scott Evans in Ocean Sounds studio, Giske (Norway), mixed by Scott Evans (January 2025), mastered by Magnus Lindberg (January 2025).

Musician credits for the track:
Kevin Galland – Bass | Luc Hess – Drums | Louis Jucker – Vocals | Jonathan Nido – Guitar

About the »Lost Love« EP:

»Nightshifter« and »Homeworking Patriarch« were recorded during the same sessions as Odd Love. Deemed too violent and dark to fit with the rest of the album, they were set aside until the band eventually decided to release them as a two-track EP entitled »Lost Love«, highlighting the fact that they stem from the same material but lack the same optimism, to say the least. While Odd Love was mixed and mastered by Grammy-nominated engineers Tom Dalgety and Robin Schmidt to ensure it shone in the most radio-friendly way possible, Coilguns asked American producer Scott Evans (Kowloon Walled City, Thrice, Ghoul) to take charge of these two tracks. Evans had already been responsible for tracking the record andhis “Sad dude core” expertise was deemed the perfect fit for these angst-drenched songs. These two lost poems showcase Coilguns at their saddest. Faintly suspended amidst ominous clouds, they aim to depict our relationship with belonging. They lament the pain of returning alone to an empty flat after pointless tours and question the sanity of working from home during lockdown in apatriarchal society where family tensions have reached boiling point.

“We initially thought our music was forever bound to be hopeless, chaotic and sad. However, after finishing the Odd Love recording sessions, it became clear that we had evolved, creating music that was much more energetic, positive and combative. Whether this happened consciously or not is hard to tell.. But listening to the whole recorded material, it felt clear that those two songs were waytoo negative and dark to fit with the rest. They reminded us of an old version of Coilguns, like when you look at old photos of yourself and wonder how you could have bared such a weird haircut. Nevertheless, we loved them for what they are and decided to put them aside for a while. Looking at how the world has changed since then, it seems we made a good move. They feel much more seasonal at the moment.” — Louis Jucker

Biography:

Initially coming from the DIY hardcore scene, Coilguns, from La Chaux-de-Fonds in Switzerland, have since then crafted their very own blend of punk and extatic noise-rock. The history of the band is deeply bound to the development of guitarist Jona Nido’s own label – Humus Records – that now gathers up to 150 releases from Swiss artists of all sonic horizons. Though their last two albums were 100% self-produced, engineered and mixed by the band members, Coilguns drove in the summer of 2022 to end-of-the-world’s Oceansound Recordings in Norway with producer Scott Evans to track their 4th studio album which was then mixed by grammy nominated producer Tom Dalgety. The band is known for its raw, uncompromising and euphoric live performances, proudly serving the dancing freaks and the crowd-surfing weirdos.
