“A guttural, groove-laden bruiser that adds an accessible sheen to crushing riff-filled metal.” — Metal Hammer
“Purveyors of an exhilarating and emotionally untamed blend of keenly melodic sludge metal.” — Bloodstock
“Earnest in a Killswitch-as-motivational-coach kind of way, WOTT blend big, drilling riffs with exploratory vocals.” — Metal Hammer
Reno, Nevada, riff-fuelled behemoths Weight Of The Tide return with their third slab of heaviness »What Pale Victory«.
Weight Of The Tide features Mark Moots and Jason Thomas – formerly of Earache Records’ December – whose 2002 »The Lament Configuration« is hailed as an underground tech-noise masterpiece.
While the chemistry remains, Weight Of The Tide is a different musical beast from past experiences. Combining a shared love of beefy riffs, trad heavy metal melodies and a dual vocal attack between Mark and Jes Phipps that has created a unique approach to the WOTT’s songwriting.

»A Pale Victory« sees the quartet return to action following guitarist/vocalist Jes’ battle with cancer and subsequent recovery following the release of 2017’s »All Told«, and the band’s stunning appearance on the Sophie Lancaster stage at Bloodstock Festival in 2018.
Ask Mark what »A Pale Victory« means to him and he cites the Charles Bukowski poem »A Song With No End« – ‘I know what he wanted: to be completely alive every moment in spite of the inevitable / we can’t cheat death but we can make it work so hard that when it does take us it will have known a victory just as perfect as ours.’ “This is a record built on appreciation of life, acknowledging death and the balance of the two,” he explains. “In my view life is a journey and something a battle but death is not defeat merely an advance to the next step. Therefore death taking life is a pale or empty victory because the spirit moves on.”
Consequently, »What Pale Victory« is a dark album yet remains optimistic throughout. From the opening statement of intent in »Void«, through to the teutonic »Memories Like Winter« to closer, the aptly named »The Last Song«, which may well be WOTT’s most powerful and cathartic song to date – laden with colossal chunky riffs of epic propositions.
Videos accompany »Memories Like Winter« and »Void« – both created by Graham Bywater from UK horror-soaked doomsters Torso.
Once again the artwork has been created by Jay Bailey (Jay Bailey Art) who has worked with Mark and Jason since their December days, as well as 2008’s »The Trouble With Crusades« by The Swamp Donkey (which features both Mark and Jason), and »All Told«.
»What Pale Victory« is available on all streaming platforms, CD and eco-vinyl via Undergroove.
