Doomed Confessionary: Marian Waibl (TarLung)

What’s better than 1 interview per day? 2 interviews 😀
TarLung is a doom/sludge band from Vienna, Austria. Their journey started in 2013 when three enthusiasts of heavy music met for the first time. Over the years this three piece played shows with well known acts like Crowbar, EyeHateGod, Acid King, Ã…rabrot, Suma and more.
Marian (drums), Philipp “Five” (guitars, vocals) and Rotten (guitars) have released three full-length albums, an EP and a split EP with KRPL. Their latest album »Architect« dropped independently in June 2021.
Can you say a few words about your band?
We are TarLung, a doom/sludge powertrio from Vienna, Austria. We are an entity with no bass guitar, but we manage to get a huge sound from just drums and two low-tuned guitars, as well as some bass DI pedal magic.
We mix some bluesy swing swagger with hard edged doom riffs, and throw some harsh vocals into the mix – so, if you are into this kind of stuff, and don’t know us yet, give us a listen at our Bandcamp site at tarlung.bandcamp.com!
What was the biggest challenge for the band this year?
We put on a tour with the fantastic Canadian band Mares of Thrace, all DIY, and that was a lot of work, as you can imagine! 11 dates throughout middle and eastern Europe – but it turned out great, and we are very proud and happy that we managed to do this!
What can you be most proud of this year?
Referring to your last question – the October tour with Mares Of Thrace, of course! They are fantastic people, and we certainly hope to see them again, and maybe do something in the future.
What was your biggest regret?
No regrets whatsoever!
What was the best concert/tour this year and why?
Oh man, I am gonna go on about the tour forever! But to be more specific, there was one date on this tour that certainly took the grand prize: Berlin, at a local punk squat. So you’d think: “Oh well, this might be fun, but certainly rather small and chaotic”, no? Au contraire: They threw a huge Helloween party, and the big hall there was packed! People in the weirdest disguise, a drag queen opening for us… it was like a mix of Mad Max and an Alice Cooper video come to life, total madness! And the people there were the best, super well organized, and super sweet in general! Also, big thanks to the fantastic Aptera for joining us, and making this happen!

What was the biggest surprise on the music scene for you?
In Budapest, we played with the astonishing trio Hegy, and they blew our minds! Check them out, they are incredible!
Where can we see you live next year (concerts/tours)?
So far, a weekender for April has been planned – and apart from that, we will check our options and see what we can get. But – next question…
What are your plans for the next year as a band? What do you personally want the most?
…the most important enterprise for next year is certainly recording new material! We have a bunch of new songs, which we think will be a great statement about what TarLung are in the year 2024, and in their 10th year of existence already! A little more refined, a little more diverse maybe, but certainly heavy, heartful, and with a mad groove. A statement about the world and life in general, which can be bleak, heavy, but also strangely exciting.

How can people best support your band?
Buy our stuff on Bandcamp, there’s still a few vinyls of our last album »Architect« left, as well as very few copies of the Split with the great noise-rock trio KRPL. Or just listen to us online. Leave a comment, that’s always highly appreciated – or maybe even tell people about us, the best things always happen through personal connections. And come to our concerts, of course!
Do you have any message for your listeners?
The world is a mess, but sometimes you can do what you love – and feel somewhat good about it. Music is a great way to connect, so let’s celebrate this together! Stay awesome and doom on!
