Currently on a Mexican tour, Coilguns (Switzerland) are releasing today the brand new two-track EP, »Lost Love«, a pair of songs that were considered too dark for the »Odd Love« album.

About »Homeworking Patriarch«:

On this track, Coilguns return to their early style, characterised bycryptic beats, anxious harmonies and desperate moans. Through achaotic sequence of horizonless riffs, the band expresses empathy for those in dysfunctional families who were forced to cohabit during lockdown with no chances of escape. The lyrics highlight the problematic roles that fathers too often embody in our patriarchal societies and the toxicity of the ‘good family man’ figure. These four minutes of noise, carefully produced by Californianengineer and musician Scott Evans (Kowloon Walled City), are aperfect example of what Evans’s “Sad Dude Core” recipe is good for: exorcising the rotten parts of ourselves.

As singer Louis Jucker says:” The paradoxical good thing about a global crisis is that it providesan opportunity for global learning. Being forced to stay at home, Ithink many of us were confronted with the dirt that had been hiddenunder our carpets for too long. If our personal situations allowed allof us in the band to get through this without being hurt too badly,we wanted to show our support for all those who weren’t as lucky aswe were .”

EP written, arranged and produced by Coilguns, recorded by Scott Evans in Ocean Sounds studio, Giske (Norway), mixed by Scott Evans (Kowloon Walled City), mastered by Magnus Lindberg (Cult Of Luna).

About the »Lost Love« EP:

»Nightshifter« and »Homeworking Patriarch« were recorded during the same sessions as »Odd Love«. Deemed too violent and dark to fit with the rest of the album, they were set aside until the band eventually decided to release them as a two-track EP entitled »Lost Love«, highlighting the fact that they stem from the same material but lack the same optimism, to say the least. While »Odd Love« was mixed and mastered by Grammy-nominated engineers Tom Dalgety and Robin Schmidt to ensure it shone in the most radio-friendly way possible, Coilguns asked American producer Scott Evans (Kowloon Walled City, Thrice, Ghoul) to take charge of these two tracks. Evans had already been responsible for tracking the record andhis “Sad dude core” expertise was deemed the perfect fit for these angst-drenched songs. These two lost poems showcase Coilguns at their saddest. Faintly suspended amidst ominous clouds, they aim to depict our relationship with belonging. They lament the pain of returning alone to an empty flat after pointless tours and question the sanity of working from home during lockdown in apatriarchal society where family tensions have reached boiling point.

“We initially thought our music was forever bound to be hopeless, chaotic and sad. However, after finishing the »Odd Love« recording sessions, it became clear that we had evolved, creating music that was much more energetic, positive and combative. Whether this happened consciously or not is hard to tell. But listening to the whole recorded material, it felt clear that those two songs were waytoo negative and dark to fit with the rest. They reminded us of an old version of Coilguns, like when you look at old photos of yourself and wonder how you could have bared such a weird haircut. Nevertheless, we loved them for what they are and decided to put them aside for a while. Looking at how the world has changed since then, it seems we made a good move. They feel much more seasonal at the moment.” — Louis Jucker

The »Lost Love« EP is now available on Humus Records on vinyl & digital.

Biography:

Initially coming from the DIY hardcore scene, Coilguns, from La Chaux-de-Fonds in Switzerland, have since then crafted their very own blend of punk and extatic noise-rock. The history of the band is deeply bound to the development of guitarist Jona Nido’s own label – Humus Records – that now gathers up to 150 releases from Swiss artists of all sonic horizons. Though their last two albums were 100% self-produced, engineered and mixed by the band members, Coilguns drove in the summer of 2022 to end-of-the-world’s Oceansound Recordings in Norway with producer Scott Evans to track their 4th studio album which was then mixed by grammy nominated producer Tom Dalgety. The band is known for its raw, uncompromising and euphoric live performances, proudly serving the dancing freaks and the crowd-surfing weirdos.
