Doomed Confessionary: Andrea Giuliani (Eye Of The Golem)

Eye Of The Golem is a post-metal band based out of Bologna, Italy. They recently signed with Octopus Rising / Argonauta Records for the release of their debut album »Nigredo« and unleashed the first single, »Psychic Walls of Desperation«, which fully represents the band’s evolving path.
Eye Of The Golem are Andrea Giuliani (bass, vocals), Alessandro Di Gloria (guitar), Mark Testino (guitars) and Hari Di Giangiacomo (drums).
Can you say a few words about your band?
Well, the concept and history of Eye of the Golem began in Bologna, Italy, in the summer of 2019. They started as a duo guitar and drums, then step by step there was an evolution, with music and different players. At the beginning I joined the band like a synth player and singer but after I became the lead vocalist and bass player. Soon the two current guitarists arrived.
We always try to create and play dreamy loud and violent down tempo music, trying to be not a copy of famous bands: conceptually and honestly we are distant from many bands of the genre in the undergrond scene, expecially in terms of attitude. We seek to expanse and not limit our style, with many connections with different genres of music. Industrial, electronic music, dark ambient and many elements from post-punk scene are evident in our tracks if you dig deeply.
What was the biggest challenge for the band?
I wish we sound not too much derivative like a lot of boring bands that try to be another satanic/esoteric copy of Electric Wizard or some instrumental post-metal bands!
What can you be most proud of so far?
I hope the same as the previous question!
What was your biggest regret?
It still takes time to have regrets actually…
What was the best concert/tour so far and why?
Probably the best concert was with other bands in Italy, Bologna city, in Freakout Club,
where we tried to spitting out our soul with the most deafening volume possible, something transcendental or at least on the edge of the spiritual way.
What was the biggest surprise on the music scene for you?
Probably nothing in particular except that the category where our style was placed has become famous over time. I never expected this in the nineties! Bands like Neurosis, (absolutly one of the best ever for me!), were in the ’90 only a strange project probably for most of the public!
What is currently in your heavy musical rotation?
I don’t know about the others, maybe Marc, one of our guitarist is more focused on avantgarde metal or experimental and eletronic ambient music. The other guitarist Ale more into new hardcore scene and postmetal, Hari the drummer too but with a little bit of more experimental metal.
Me, I think I always listen with pleasure new wave and post-punk, but old industrial too and krautrock: stuff like Popol Vuh, last Talk Talk albums, The The, Godflesh, 23 Skidoo, Japan, Fields Of The Nephilim, and of course Neurosis and The Jesus Lizard!
What was the best advice you’ve ever been given as a musician?
No one has ever given me advice, I had to learn everything on my own with difficulty! They are almost all selfish! Sad but true!
So I can try to suggest to the people, try always to dig deeper in the culture to find some big treasures.

What are your guilty pleasures?
To write the lyrics of the band, as a sort of psychological therapy to cure myself, exorcising the horrors of my life. No ones has complained until now…
Can you say something more about the music scene in Bologna / Emilia-Romagna?
In my opinion the situation is not bad about a lot of bands that are growing good, I speak about all the state, in particular in Bologna city.
Very good bands like Holy Giant, Orbita, Messa, Ufomammut of course, Mr. Bison, Jahbulong, Bleeding Eyes…
The problem here in this Italian pop culture state is ignorance and no good work experience to be professional for great metal events.
Where can we see you live this year (concerts/tours)?
Probably when our album »Nigredo« will be out at the end of September 2024, you can see us in Italy, in Bologna and in some parts of Europe, like Slovenia and Croatia, but Germany too.
What are your plans for the future as a band?
Like I told you, the album, then touring Europe and after a new album, we are already writing some new crazy songs!
How can people best support your band?
To be on our concerts, to speak and comunicate with us and to buy of course our merch.
Do you have any message for your listeners?
By my side I can tell to them to be curios about life and expecially music and art in general. Emotions must guide the world not egoism. Life is only a state of mind.
Thank you very much for your time with me and to all the public of Doomed Nation!
