Doomed Confessionary: Doctor Nez

Doctor Nez’s second EP »High Desert Lows« was just released on November 15th, 2024. Standout tracks »Mark The Grave« and »High Desert Lows« have been featured on numerous podcasts and radio stations worldwide.

»High Desert Lows« EP will satisfy nearly any appetite. Listeners will wander through the arid wastelands of the Mojave Desert on a journey the frozen Rocky Mountains, accompanied by an auditory blending of stoner rock, grunge, electronic groove, dark instrumental post-rock, doom, and classic heavy metal. The desert calls to you; sing the lamentations, sway to the rhythm, and stay hydrated.

Can you say a few words about your band?
Doctor Nez is a solo desert rock project in Colorado, USA! I don’t stick specifically to the stoner, doom, or adjacent genres, choosing instead to take inspiration from them along with alternative rock and classic heavy metal. What I lack in production quality I make up for in earnest effort and full vulnerability. Oh, and riffs. Can’t forget those.

What was the biggest challenge for you?
Making the time to create all of the music I’ve released so far; between a full-time job, a wife and child, and an unhealthy amount of Dungeons & Dragons, it’s a challenge getting tracks done in a timely manner.

What can you be most proud of so far?
Getting »High Desert Lows« out there! I think it’s leaps and bounds beyond my previous EP, »Scary Faces«. Hopefully I can continue to ascend in quality and creativity.

What was your biggest regret?
No regrets; time only moves forward.

What was the best concert/tour so far and why?
I haven’t begun doing live shows yet. I’m looking to round up some musicians and play a few shows in 2025 though (Colorado Springs guitarists and drummers who enjoy the tunes enough to perform them, where y’all at?).

What was the biggest surprise on the music scene for you?
I had no idea how many bands there were in the desert/stoner/doom sphere. It’s honestly unbelievable how many releases there are every week. For such a small genre in the grand scheme of things, we’re absolutely everywhere and unrelenting.

What is currently in your heavy musical rotation?
I’ll go with albums for this one: »You’re Not Alone« by Andrew WK, »This Heathen Land« by Green Lung, »Astral Lady« by Lord Velvet, »Venus Doom« by HIM, and »Rainier Fog« by Alice In Chains.

What was the best advice you’ve ever been given as a musician?
The more you focus on the money, the more you’ll lose the love for what you do…but still, make sure you get paid.

What are your guilty pleasures?
The 2008 album »The Block« by New Kids On The Block, Biloxi Mississippi, and really long gameplay videos.

Can you say something more about the current music scene in Colorado?
Denver, CO has the most insanely cool scene. You can’t throw a rock without hitting a killer band. I’m really hoping to get on some shows out there this year. I listen to a lot of local bands in my free time, and I’ve seen some of the great venues and promoters/managers here in action online. It seems like one of the best cities for the genre right now.

What are your plans for the future as a band?
The hope is to put out a minimum of 5-6 songs per year, and get on a stage at least 3 times in 2025. If either of those numbers wind up bigger I’ll be psyched. I’d also like to get a bit of merch if finances allow for it.

Do you have any special plans for New Year’s Eve?
Damn, I haven’t even thought of New Year’s Eve…probably not? Probably would be tough to get a babysitter that I’m comfortable with, but if it happens I’d love to take my wife on a date.

How can people best support your band?
Buy the digital release of »High Desert Lows« via Bandcamp. It’s the only thing I have to sell right now and the proceeds would go back into the project, likely by way of merch.

Do you have any message for your listeners?
Just know that I see y’all, and I appreciate everything. Keep an eye out for podcast appearances and interviews; they’re one of the best ways I have right now to show future gig-runners that people are listening. If you’re one of my listeners, thanks for being here with me! Every note came from somewhere very genuine (especially the flat and sharp ones), and you might even find something relatable in these songs. Hope to see y’all out in the real world sometime!
