Doomed Confessionary: Lucas Wyssbrod (Monovoth)
Let’s jump to South America today! Monovoth is an instrumental doom/drone metal one-man project from Buenos Aires, Argentina. New Monovoth’s album »Pleroma Mortem Est« is set for release on February 16th, 2024 via Trepanation Recordings.
Can you say a few words about your band?
Monovoth was formed in 2021. At that time, I was exploring various death metal, grindcore, and black metal projects. However, I had a strong desire to delve into more ambient, doom, or even drone territory, infusing my own signature into the style and experimenting with it.
What was the biggest challenge for the band this year?
From day one after the release of the first album, the challenge has been to surpass it artistically in every sense—visually, musically, and thematically. Shelving some side-projects to focus entirely on Monovoth was something I finally did this year, but it was hard to do.
What can you be most proud of this year?
I’m really proud of the entire process of »Pleroma Mortem Est«. I hope people truly immerse themselves in the experience come February, delving into those sounds as deeply as I did. As I mentioned earlier, the challenge was to create something superior to the debut, and I believe this one knocks it out of the park.
What was your biggest regret?
I think, in general, I don’t have regrets. I’ve learned from everything that has led me down this path. Every sour grape has taught me to be better, work better, focus, and carry on.
What was the best concert/tour this year and why?
Saw Deafheaven and Alcest both this year, and they blew my mind away—huge influences lately.
What was the biggest surprise on the music scene for you?
These last couple of years have been crazy for the local scene. There are bands like Avernal that have been around for a long time that are currently SO tight and amazing. Meanwhile, newer or more recent projects are just killing it out there – Los Males del Mundo is currently touring around the world, Psicosfera just released a new album, there are even new one-man projects as Dios Serpiente and the list goes on. While the scene might be smaller than in previous years, it has just gotten tighter, better, and more refined.
Where can we see you live next year (concerts/tours)?
I’m currently working on a small setlist, but I can’t reveal more at the moment. As this is a one-man project, there haven’t been any live shows yet. However, 2024 is around the corner, and I have some ‘out-of-the-box’ ideas to present the material.
What are your plans for the next year as a band? What do you personally want the most?
I just want people to connect with the songs, to connect with grief, to connect with the strength to overcome every small drop of poison, and to carry on. The whole album is about the acceptance of death and dealing with finitude..
