Doomed Confessionary: Philipp “Hacku” Hackbarth (Dead Myrick)

Dead Myrick is a stoner rock power trio from Dresden, Germany.
Founded in 2017, Dead Myrick consists of Franz Danzer (bass, vocals), Philipp “Hacku” Hackbarth (guitar) and Friedrich “Friedo” Rau (drums).
Dead Myrick have released their latest two-track single »Fallen King / Breathe The Fire« on February 19th, 2025. Their song »Fallen King« was also included on Weedian’s »Trip to Germany II« earlier this year.
Can you say a few words about your band?
Dead Myrick was founded in 2017. After a few lineup changes, we solidified with Franz Danzer on vocals and bass, me – Philipp “Hacku” Hackbarth on guitar, and Friedrich “Friedo” Rau on drums.
In 2022, we released our debut EP »Rolling Steel« and started to play live shows early on. Until today, we’ve played various gigs and festivals, national and international. Our latest single, »Fallen King / Breathe The Fire«, dropped in February 2025, showcases our heavier side and is a preview for our second EP »Rust Issues« which will be released on July 10th, 2025.
What was the biggest challenge for the band?
One of our biggest challenges has been learning how to merge our different musical backgrounds and strong individual voices into a cohesive songwriting process. Each of us brings distinct influences and ideas to the table, which can make collaboration both exciting and complicated. It took some time to find a way of working where we all feel equally involved creatively – but usually, there’s a moment in the process when everything clicks and the song starts to feel completely natural. Of course, getting there isn’t always easy, but that tension is also part of what shapes our sound.
What can you be most proud of so far?
Looking back at the past seven years, we’ve accomplished quite a lot. We’ve performed numerous shows, released some music, gained valuable experience, and formed the band in our own unique way. Dead Myrick is the three of us – we make all decisions independently, without external influence, ensuring our creative vision remains entirely our own.
What was your biggest regret?
I don’t waste time on regrets. Shit happens, you deal with it, learn what you can, and make it hit harder next time. Simple as that.
What was the best concert/tour so far and why?
Tough call – but probably our gig at Open Air am Bielersee last year. Perfect summer weather, a stunning view of the lake from stage, and a crowd that was fully ready to party. We drove 1600 km just to get there, but the whole weekend was rad as hell and absolutely worth it.
What was the biggest surprise for you on the music scene?
For me, it’s how relaxed and grounded everyone is! Meeting musicians in person whose work I’ve admired for years is always a bit surreal because I’m a fan, even if I’m hanging out backstage with them and waiting for our performance. It usually doesn’t take long before we start discussing gear or music in general, which is always a great pleasure for me.
What is currently in your heavy musical rotation?
Electric Wizard – »Black Magic Rituals and Perversions Vol. 1«
The Black Keys – »Rubber Factory«
LA LOM – »The Los Angeles League Of Musicians«
What was the best advice you’ve ever been given as a musician?
Start slow and get it clean – muscle memory is a bitch to rewire once it’s locked in wrong. Tight playing at low speed builds control and tone, and once that’s solid, speed’s just a side effect. I think that applies to a lot of situations in life, too.
What are your guilty pleasures?
I quit smoking two years ago after 24 years, and I’ve also been off alcohol for quite a while now – so I guess video games are the last guilty pleasure standing. I grew up with them and still love to play. I rarely find the time these days, but when I do, I randomly declare it a full-blown gaming night – no shame, no schedule, just me escaping reality for a few hours.
Can you say something more about the current music scene in Dresden?
We are very lucky to have a quite active scene, especially for stoner and heavy rock in Dresden, mostly because of ElbSludgeBooking – a collective of people who organize stoner, doom, and heavy psych shows on a regular basis. Our drummer Friedo is the head of it, and I’m also a member. We do a lot of lesser-known bands as well as the big ones. We also do Heavy Psych Fest Dresden – last time with Fu Manchu as headliner! But Dresden has quite a lot of concerts to offer in other genres too and is an absolutely beautiful city, so it’s definitely worth a visit!
Where can we see you live this year (concerts/tours)?
We are really proud to play at Stoned From The Underground on July 10th. Also, Saalepartie in September will be awesome. And in between and around these dates, we have several other gigs – just check our website for current dates; we always try to keep it up to date.
What are your plans for the future as a band?
Since we’re about to release our second EP now, it is finally time to write some new material. Producing the EP was a kind of time-consuming process, especially with everyone involved in different other stuff and working 9 to 5, etc. So it’s good to have a checkmark behind this and move on to new lands! 🙂
How can people best support your band?
Come to our shows, party with us, and get some of our awesome merchandise! 🙂
Do you have any message for your listeners?
Turn it up to 11. Always. Life’s short – might as well make some noise.
