Doomed Confessionary: Scott Fisher (Amammoth)

Amammoth is a stoner/sludge/doom metal trio from Sydney, Australia. Originally emerged in 2016 with a demo called »Inhale«, Amammoth consists of Scott Fisher on vocals and guitar, Warwick Poulton on bass and Scott Wilson on drums.
Now, with a host of achievements under their belts – including the release of their debut EP, »Blackwitch« (2019), and their first full-length, »The Fire Above« (2021), as well as a series of frenzied, electrifying live shows – Amammoth returns with their second LP, »Distant Skies And The Ocean Flies«, released on March 21st, 2025 via Electric Valley Records.
While their debut album explored the myth of the sun as the creator of life rather than a religious figure and even vilified the privileged class on certain parts, »Distant Skies And The Ocean Flies« plunges deep into the mysteries of the ocean. This new record weaves narratives around hidden aquatic secrets, UFO conspiracy theories, and the notion of alien life lurking within the ocean’s uncharted depths. The songs’ robust, sludgy aggressiveness this time somehow outweighs the drowned-out, interstellar trippy ambition.
Can you say a few words about your band?
We are a sludge/doom stoner metal band from Sydney, Australia playing songs I wrote about UFOs, aliens, religion, politics and the government. We are trying to set ourselves aside from other bands and do something different and say it our way. We hope people will like it!
What was the biggest challenge for the band?
The biggest challenge is probably to try and keep it all together as we all have full time jobs, but we always find the time to rehearse regularly and try to play as many shows as we can.
What can you be most proud of so far?
Well for me the thing I am proudest of so far is getting to record our albums at the Pet Food Factory in Sydney, which is owned and run Jay Whalley, singer of Frenzal Rhomb, a band I grew up listening to as a kid. One of the first albums, in fact the second CD I ever bought with my own money was a Frenzal album. They mean a lot to me and I flogged their albums as a kid, riding a skateboard. To be able to work with Jay and have him play keyboards with us on our albums is fucking crazy! I am completely blown away by it! Then there was getting signed to Electric Valley Records, which was like winning the lottery! It’s a good feeling knowing that someone believes in your art. It is great to work with Marco and Electric Valley. 1782 are an amazing band!
What was your biggest regret?
My biggest regret this year would be putting my Fender Telecaster into the shop for a service. It has never been the same since! So now I am stuck playing a Gibson.
What was the best concert/tour so far and why?
We are in the works of planning a tour for our latest record, »Distant Skies And The Ocean Flies«. Living in Australia, with it being so far from the rest of the world, we don’t get too many doom bands touring from overseas so we play with a lot of Aussie bands. Playing with Holy Serpent was cool and Cruciform. Witchskull are always good dudes to play with and Lucifungus, who organise and run a festival every year in Canberra, Australia’s only legal marijuana state called Sunburn Festival. It’s always loads of fun there catching up with friends from around the country!

What was the biggest surprise on the music scene for you?
That people listen to us hahaha. And everyone is really nice and supportive. But the music industry is always full of surprises. You never know what is around the corner or what doors will open, like Bobby Liebling from Pentagram being a fucking meme on the Internet or Brent Hinds leaving Mastodon… I was very surprised haha.
What is currently in your heavy musical rotation?
I have been listening to the Bronco album from the dudes from Toke. The new Ghostsmoker is good, they are a good Australian band. I have also been listening to Neurosis, Mastodon and »Bleach« by Nirvana. Mephistofeles are always on high rotation, I love that band, they are so freaking cool!
What was the best advice you’ve ever been given as a musician?
Probably when we are recording. Jay always gives good advice, as I just want to plug in and turn everything up and scream my fucking guts out. He taught me how to sing in key… kind of, I guess. And a guy once told us not to break up and just always keep playing.
What are your guilty pleasures?
There are many demons that fuel this machine but I can never say no to a smoke.
Can you say something more about current music scene in Sydney?
Yeah it’s good. There are lots of really good bands that work really hard. I think Sydney has always been known for having bad-ass bands like AC/DC, Rose Tattoo, The Hard Ons and Radio Birdman. I feel if you are going to be in a band from Sydney you have a lot to live up to. Even the bands getting around now. There are some really good heavy shit going on in the dingy, underground dive bars in the outskirts of Sydney CBD.
Where can we see you live this year (concerts/tours)?
We are trying to play as much as we can to support the new record. We just played a release show and we have another show coming up this week with Scum Fu. Then we have another coming up with Earth Bong, which I am very excited for. We have a few shows on the horizon and we are trying to book a tour. Hopefully we can play a few shows overseas soon too.
What are your plans for the future as a band?
We just take one day at a time but my biggest plan is to tour and take Amammoth overseas. We have made friends with so many bands around the world and we would love to go and play shows with them all and to sling some riffs to our fans around the world.
How can people best support your band?
The best way is to keep listening, although streams don’t pay much they still count. Buy a record or a t-shirt or come to a show, it all helps. We, like every band around the world, are struggling, so any support is very much appreciated.
Do you have any message for your listeners?
Thank you so much for all your support. You fuel the fire.
