Doomed Confessionary: Tom Ott (Weeping Kin)

Weeping Kin is a project by musician Tom Ott from Amberg, Germany, setting out to create the most melancholic doom metal possible, inspired by bands like My Dying Bride, Mourning Beloveth and Swallow The Sun.
The music incorporates heavy yet melodic dual guitars, slow, thundering rhythms and a mixture of sorrowful and melodious vocals. The songs, often long and complex in structure, show progressive tendencies, with tempo changes and different time signatures.
Founded in 2021, the first album »Gnawing« was released in December 2022. The lyrics are personal, layered and often written in a stream of consciousness. The second album »Waterbound« (2023) is an ambitious concept album, more heavy yet more melodic than the first one. While the sound and grandiosity of each release may evolve and change, the essence of Weeping Kin remains unmistakable.
Weeping Kin’s latest release, »Epoch Of Mourning« EP, just dropped on February 28th, 2025.
Can you say a few words about your band?
Well, Weeping Kin is not really a band, more of a musical project, since I do everything alone. That gives me massive creative freedom and ensures, that everything goes how fast or slow I want it to! It’s quite liberating.
It’s a gothic-y melodic type of Doom Metal!
What was the biggest challenge for the band?
Probably the latest EP, »Epoch Of Mourning« The whole production/mixing process was quite arduous. Probably also because of all the heavy emotions connected to the songs. Sometimes, I thought it would never be finished.
What can you be most proud of so far?
The music video for »A Place In My Dreams«! But I’m generelly quite proud of the musical output so far.
What was your biggest regret?
As weird as this sounds, but there are no big regrets I have concerning last year. But in general, this is a big one: the prog metal band Headspace was playing a rare concert near me in Aschaffenburg, and I didn’t go. I still regret that, greatly. Still hoping they’re doing another tour in the future!
What was the best concert/tour so far and why?
Well, Weeping Kin has not played any concerts so far, so I guess you don’t mean that! But me personally, just in recent times, I went to see Revocation, who were fantastic. And the In The Woods…/Saturnus/Foreshadowing tour in 2023 was phenomenal. Too many great memories to count.
What was the biggest surprise on the music scene for you?
How little support there is for AI art! I really thought, it would replace a lot of great art, because people would want to lower their budget for music, but that aspect still thrives. Many still use AI art, but much less that I thought. And I believe the audience does not like seeing AI art, either. The whole situation with Pestilence is evidence for that.
What is currently in your heavy musical rotation?
Currently I’m listening to the 2024 remixes of the first four Threshold albums a lot, especially »Clone« and »Psychedelicatessen«. Apart from that, the recent Borknagar albums and the Tony Martin-era Black Sabbath albums are on heavy rotation!
What was the best advice you’ve ever been given as a musician?
That you can focus on many aspects of making music; production, technical finesse, whatever. But in the end, song is king! If the song sucks, nothing else will make up for it.
What are your guilty pleasures?
Well, for example, I like playing SingStar with my wife, from time to time. Is that a guilty pleasure? If not, I’m struggling to think what is…
Can you say something more about current music scene in Amberg?
Well, it’s pretty saturated with heavy/thrash bands.
Where can we see you live this year (concerts/tours)?
Honestly, I don’t know! But realistically, probably not in 2025.
What are your plans for the future?
Well, hopefully we can bring Weeping Kin to the stage in the future. Apart from that, I have many, many musical ideas, and I wish to release them all before I die! So more albums hopefully.
