Doomed Confessionary: Abel Oliva (Godes Yrre)

Born in 1994 as a side-project by Abel Oliva from Cuban cult band Sectarium. Reborn in Switzerland in 2017, with influences from industrial, ethnic and classical music. Now also adding a gothic/stoner touch.
In 1994 released the demo »A Divine Image« with great world-wide underground reception. 20 years later the band reborn with »Inside The Whale«, an album full poetry and biblical texts, a mix of doom and industrial metal. In 2018 appear »Ghost Warriors«, a darker death/doom/industrial and a modern and avant-garde air. In 2020 released »Das Nichts« adding a gothic feeling and taking another step towards consolidating the project. »Symphony Of Termination« (2021) brings together tracks from previous albums, re-arranged in orchestral format, without losing the dark and avant-garde touch.
After a break of almost two years, in 2023 released a double compilation album that includes all the songs from the previous albums with new arrangements, remixed and remastered. In 2024, a cycle of three EPs of three six-minute songs each begins, with the premise of including guest musicians for the first time, and exploring a path with a lot of stoner and gothic. The project was expected to culminate in 2025, gathering the three EPs into one album entitled »Feelings Can Burn You«, with all the songs remixed and remastered. Godes Yrre is a band conceived to release studio albums and therefore does not have tour dates now, which we would not rule out doing in the near future.
Can you say a few words about your band?
Godes Yrre is a one-man project, born in 1994 in Cuba and established since 2012 in Switzerland. It started as industrial doom and has been drifting towards something more stoner and gothic, giving way to collaborations with other musicians.
What was the biggest challenge for the band?
Producing new recordings and continuing to gain fans around the world, and that being a studio band that doesn’t tour or play concerts.
What can you be most proud of so far?
Having improved the quality of each new album release, both in terms of composition and sound in general. And improving the way of singing, giving more nuances.
What was your biggest regret?
The doubt is always the same, is it possible to keep going, recording new albums and surpassing what has been done before? I regret doubting myself sometimes.
What was the best concert/tour so far and why?
Someday maybe it will happen, for now I am a dinosaur in his cave, someone who distills his fears in each new song.
What was the biggest surprise on the music scene for you?
None personally. Even less so internationally, metal and rock in general are slowly dying in an increasingly narcissistic and AI-dependent society.
What is currently in your heavy musical rotation?
I listen to everything, from classical music to the most extreme death metal, but hardly any of that “shit-core”. Lately more music from the 70s, but it depends on how I’m feeling that day.
What was the best advice you’ve ever been given as a musician?
The same as anyone else, if you do things chasing success you may end up disillusioned and doing nothing. That’s why I release album after album on my own, and I don’t expect anything in return other than some unknown person listening to it.
What are your guilty pleasures?
I tend to collect (and taste) whiskeys, if that counts as a “guilty” pleasure.
Can you say something more about current music scene in Winterthur?
I live in a quiet, nondescript town. In the nearby city of Winterthur there are many interesting bands, but I prefer not to mention anyone and leave it to your curiosity to find them.
Where can we see you live this year (concerts/tours)?
I don’t tour, but I do release videos on YouTube, so you can watch and listen to these music videos from anywhere in the world.
What are your plans for the future as a band?
As I always answer this cliché question, the only future plan for Godes Yrre is to continue producing new albums and EPs, and the success of these releases is the music itself.
How can people best support your band?
Very easy, listening to our music on streaming platforms like Spotify, Youtube Music, Apple Music, Bandcamp, etc. Also suggesting to friends that they listen to Godes Yrre.
Do you have any message for your listeners?
You can support Godes Yrre by listening to our music. Interviews and reviews are welcome. Keep the spirit of doom alive!
