Hungary’s premier instrumental post-rock band Törzs return with the understated sonic beauty of »Menedèk«, their first new music in six years. Loosely translating as ‘Refuge’, »Menedèk« sees the freshly bolstered trio in their element; finding shelter, comfort and joy in the act of creative collaboration whilst the storm of day to day life weathers ever on.

When founding drummer Zsombor Lehoczky stepped away from the band and music as a whole, remaining members Soma Balázs (guitar) and Dániel Nyitray (bass) soon found a connection with Tamás Szijártó, who approached Törzs’ music with the same openness to creativity in the moment; not ‘performing’ as such, but simply working together to produce breathtaking, musical escapism away from the daily humdrum.

Törzs’s new full-length album »Menedèk« will be released on May 16th, 2025 via Pelagic Records.

Can you say a few words about your band?
Dániel: Törzs is an instrumental post-rock band from Budapest, Hungary.

What was the biggest challenge for the band?
Dániel: We all have full time jobs – finding time and energy for the band is sometimes a challenge.

What can you be most proud of so far?
Dániel: The band’s previous full-length release, 2019’s »Tükor«, was recorded live at Aggteleki Cseppkőbarlang, a UNESCO World Heritage protected cave system, 500 metres below the Aggteleki National Park. Embracing the cave’s utterly unique natural reverb almost as a fourth member. We are also super proud of our upcoming album »Menedèk«, and that it is going to be released by Pelagic Records, the cornerstone of post music.

What was your biggest regret?
Tamás: Stopped practicing drums a long time ago because I didn’t expect to join a band as a drummer again.

What was the best concert/tour so far and why?
Dániel: We had two full tours with Syberia (CAT) and Oh Hiroshima (SE) which were amazing, both of the bands became great friends of ours. But we shared the stage with amazing bands like We Lost The Sea (AUS), God Is An Astronaut (IRL), Maybeshewill (UK), Stoned Jesus (UA), hubris. (CH). All were great experiences.

Soma: Playing in Budapest’s most famous cemetery was one of our greatest live experiences. The atmosphere was incredible.

What was the biggest surprise on the music scene for you?
Soma: It’s so nice to see and experience that a relatively small band from Hungary can get international attention. The post music scene is a big community with very friendly and helpful people around the world.

What is currently in your heavy musical rotation?
Dániel: Hermanos Gutierrez.

Tamás: The Horrors.

Soma: Mogwai.

What was the best advice you’ve ever been given as a musician?
Dániel: “Your music is good, keep doing it.”

What are your guilty pleasures?
Making nasty fake rap lines during tour and rehearsal.

Tamás: 80s synth waves music.

Can you say something more about current music scene in Budapest?
Dániel: In Budapest we have three great venues where we love to play (Dürer, A38, Turbina), and they also book great post-rock bands from time to time. There is a good amount of people interested in post music.

Where can we see you live this year (concerts/tours)?
Dániel: We are going on a tour from April 8-21, and have gigs in Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, France and Switzerland. We’ll also play at Pelagic Fest (NL) in August.

What are your plans for the future as a band?
Dániel: We head for a two week tour in a few days. Then we’ll have our album release show in Budapest. We also have so many shows for this year that our calendar is getting full. Hopefully we can start working on our next album slowly.

How can people best support your band?
Dániel: Listen to our music and show it to friends who might like it. Come to our shows if we play nearby. Order our vinyls, merch.

Do you have any message for your listeners?
Dániel: Follow us on the platforms you use.
