Doomed Confessionary: M (Abysmal Rites)

Formed in late 2021 in Tampere, Finland, Abysmal Rites began as a duo and quickly evolved into a trio, solidifying their lineup with J on drums, M on bass, and R on vocals.

Their first taste of success came with the music video »Polluted«, which was selected for the Most Bizarre category at the Berlin Music Video Festival. Their debut full-length album, »Nihilism Is Realism«, was self-released in 2023, showcasing their clear vision and determination to carve out a unique sound in the heavy music landscape.

With their second album »Restoring The Primordial Order«, Abysmal Rites invites listeners to join them on a journey through the depths of human experience, wrapped in a sound that is as heavy as it is thought-provoking. Recorded deep within the Finnish forest, the new album captures the raw energy and authenticity that defines Abysmal Rites.

»Restoring The Primordial Order« will be released on May 9th, 2025 via Wormholedeath Records.

Can you please say a few words about your band?
Abysmal Rites is a trio. A noisy band with a totally personal and sinister sound. One big reason is that the electric guitar, taken for granted in rock and metal, is not part of this concept. This band is also worth experiencing live at a gig

What was the biggest challenge for the band?
Maybe in this day and age you can’t find the right potential listeners, because there is so much on offer. However, now that we have Wormholedeath Records behind us it certainly helps.
And also getting gigs around here if you don’t want to play the same venues over and over again. That’s why we’re also interested in playing abroad and hopefully it will happen one day.

What can you be most proud of so far?
In general, the fact that we have our own thing that we’re not willing to give up or compromise on. And there are three people here, none of whom are replaceable.

What was your biggest regret?
We have nothing to be sorry about. Well, maybe only for those who haven’t heard us yet. And at the same time for those who have and like what they hear.

What was the best concert/tour so far and why?
There have been very few of them, unfortunately. All the gigs have been good in their own way. Just to see one person get excited is rewarding. But the more new people interested, the better. But more gigs please!

What was the biggest surprise on the music scene for you?
Perhaps there have been no surprises in particular. Music has been around since I was a kid and I’ve never been interested in being in any music scene because none of it feels like my own.

What is currently in your heavy musical rotation?
It really varies a lot. Personally, I listen to music from all over the place. From really light to extremely heavy. Maybe that kind of overproduced mainstream rock and metal doesn’t really appeal to me. Anything with soul and authenticity usually works.
But if you want an example of heavier music that has hit recently then Damaar and Chained To The Bottom Of The Ocean are worth a mention.

What was the best advice you’ve ever been given as a musician?
Perhaps no direct advice comes to mind, and if you have ever received it when you were younger, you probably forgot it immediately. Perhaps they have been learned the hard way and something has been learned.

What are your guilty pleasures?
The greatest pleasure is creating new music. And to try to transcend what’s come before. The third album is metaphorically “rotten bones slowly starting to get flesh around them” in the form of inspiration. This band’s music is a great way to vent your frustrations and anxieties about the state of the world and people. It’s a never-ending source.

Can you say something more about thr current music scene in Tampere?
Maybe I don’t have much to say about it, at least for me.

Where can we see you live this year (concerts/tours)?
So far only in Finland and next time at the album release show in Tampere.

What are your plans for the future as a band?
Working on the third album and making it as crushing as possible. A foreign tour would be a great thing at some point. At least we’d have something to offer people.

How can people best support your band?
By buying the new »Restoring The Primordial Order« album. Promoting our nihilistic good news to all your friends and acquaintances. By following us on social media so you can keep up with what’s happening when.

Do you have any message for your listeners?
Oppose this insane madness that the world is now full of. Oh, and listen to our new album.
