Doomsday Sun is a doom/death/groove metal band based out of Stoke-On-Trent, UK.
Their first full-length album »A Slow, Agonising Rapture« is a concept album, that aims to bring listeners face-to-face with issues that cause unrest in the world today, and demonstrate how they could lead to the total collapse of global civilisation. The story of a charismatic leader, so desperate to realise his vision that he forsakes his own people, is not only told through the lyrics of each song, but also through the atmosphere that the music creates.
Doomsday Sun are Matt Hudson (lead vocals, guitar, voiceovers), Tom Hubball (drums, lead & backing vocals, guitar, voiceovers), Jake Dangerous (guitar) and Rich Oakes (bass, backing vocals).
Can you say a few words about your band?
Good day! We’re Doomsday Sun, post-apocalyptic rock n rollers from the midlands in England. We’re known for providing what most UK Midlands bands are known for; riffs, and commentary on the ever-present bleakness of our surroundings.
What was the biggest challenge for the band?
This was, and continues to be, fitting everything in one tiny car when travelling to gigs.
What can you be most proud of so far?
Easy. Our album; »A Slow, Agonising Rapture«. The playing and production is the best it can be, and the songs written are a great eclectic mix, as well as feeling good in general.
Kudos to Lethal Audio for handling that one for us.
What was your biggest regret?
Accepting a gig at a place called “The Old Bus Depot”. We didn’t realise it would literally be an old bus depot.
What was the best concert/tour so far and why?
The 1984 US Spinal Tap Tour. They’re far more professional than we could ever hope to be.
What was the biggest surprise on the music scene for you?
We’ve gigged with a fair few bands that have exceeded our expectations. Spectral Darkwave, Dog Tired, Malboo, to name a few.
What is currently in your heavy musical rotation?
Been on a bit of a Slayer kick recently, but also been going back to old Carcass and Demolition Hammer records.
What was the best advice you’ve ever been given as a musician?
“Always label your bodybags.”
What are your guilty pleasures?
Sometimes we change underwear twice a week. A bit dainty, I know!
Can you say something more about current music scene in Staffordshire?
Having been up and down the country I honestly believe Stoke-On-Trent (our hometown) punches well above its weight with the bands it has to offer. We’re proud to be part of it.
Where can we see you live this year (concerts/tours)?
Just did a weekender (4th-6th October) with Mufunta in Nottingham, Rotherham and Stoke.
11th Oct; 66 Bar, Cambridge (w/ Maziac & Voytek)
12th Oct; Old Pint Pot, Salford (w/ A Thousand Cuts, Worm Hero & more TBC)
24th Nov; Eleven, Stoke-On-Trent
What are your plans for the future as a band?
We’re pretty amazed that we’ve got this far, so to be honest, we’re still working that out.
How can people best support your band?
Buying our merchandise or music allows us to carry on doing what we do, but even just listening to us on Bandcamp/YouTube, and following our social pages helps.
Do you have any message for your listeners?
Stay warm, stay hydrated and experience new things. Sleeping inside a sheep carcass will usually check all three of those boxes.
