»Hoge Yage (The Ritual Of The Beginning Of The Path)«:

“This is a song that precedes a shamanic rite and opens the way. For a successful ritual-journey, a shaman needs not only skillful handling of spirits, but it is also important how he begins his journey. Opening rites, or White Road rites, are an important element of Siberian traditional shamanism that have survived to this day. A rite containing protective spells and spells for a clean and successful path is very important in any endeavor, and such songs are still used as amulets before starting some important business among the indigenous peoples of Siberia.” — Anatoly Pakhalenko / Nytt Land

In a non-pop cultural, classic sense, the term ‘shamanism’ refers primarily to spiritual practices of indigenous Siberian peoples. Shamans interact with the spirit world through altered states of consciousness as protectors of their communities. On their album »Songs Of The Shaman«, NYTT LAND interpret traditional shamanic songs or spells of Siberia’s Manchu–Tungus ethno-linguistic groups. These songs use ancient musical techniques such as throat singing and drums and they were recorded in their original language. The latter was done to preserve the power that lies in the sound and the phonetics as well as the rhythm of the texts. This collection of primordial magic in the shape of songs summoning spirits, incantations, and wards has been carefully selected and deliberately excludes spells that are aimed at causing harm.

NYTT LAND came into being as a ritualistic Nordic folk band envisioned by the husband and wife duo Natalya and Anatoly Pakhalenko in the Western Siberian town Kalachinsk, on the banks of River Om and crossed by the Trans-Siberian Railway, in August 2013. Following three self-released albums, »Nytt Land« (2013), »Hávamál« (2015), and »Scopun: Songs From The Elder Edda« (2016), their label debut »Fimbulvinter« came out in 2017 and was followed by the 2018 full-length »Oðal«. While NYTT LAND also continued to self-release albums, the Siberian elements in their music began to surface stronger than before on their third label full-length »Ritual«. With »Songs Of The Shaman«, NYTT LAND take the ones willing to hear on a journey to a place in time and space where spirits rule and even gods fear to tread. Listen with caution!

»Hailambi Xulembi (The Ritual Of Exorcising An Evil Dead Spirit)«:

“The song »Hailambi Xulembi« is the first single of the new album by NYTT LAND, which is scheduled for release in spring 2025. The song is an ancient Tunguso-Manchurian traditional shamanic spell to exorcise the evil spirit of a dead-man who haunts living people. The lyrics of the song are taken from the ancient shamanic rituals of the Tungus-Manchurian peoples of Southern Siberia, described in ethnographic monographs by Russian and Chinese scientists who studied the way of life and religious worldviews of these people in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. »Hailambi Xulembi« was recorded in compliance with the preliminary protective shamanic rituals, some of which were filmed for the video clip of this song and performed without abbreviations in the original language with the most accurate preservation of the phonetics and the power of this ancient shamanic spell. This recording can be used for shamanic and neoshamanic rituals.” — Anatoly Pakhalenko

»Cingelji Ingelji (The Song Of The Shaman’s Assistant)«:

“The song of the shaman’s assistant, or rather the song that the shaman’s assistant performs when the shaman makes the transition between worlds. With the help of this song, the person helping the shaman in his rite helps to complete this very transition, picking up the rhythm of the shaman’s drum.

This track, like all the other songs on the »Songs Of The Shaman« album, is a recording of a real authentic Tunguso-Manchu shamanic ritual. The lyrics of the song have come down to us from ancient Chinese sources. We did not specifically translate the song into a modern language, but recorded it in its most original sound in order to preserve and convey all the energy and ancient power of traditional shamanic rituals.” — Anatoly Pakhalenko
