Din Of Celestial Birds fly high on their adventurous new album »Takeoffs & Landings«!

Din Of Celestial Birds have quickly become one of the UK’s most championed and hard working heavy progressive post-rock bands, known for their vibrant, visually engaging live performances. The Leeds based instrumental quintet have often been praised for their ability to bring a sense of storytelling and heart-on-your-sleeve emotions into their elegantly textured and energetic songs. This desire for connection has seen Din Of Celestial Birds and their fanbase flock to bigger and wider stages, nesting at the likes of ArcTanGent, Damnation, and StrangeForms festivals, and soaring across multiple headlining tours since the release of their debut album. Now, the quintet return with their brand new full length studio record »Takeoffs & Landings«, a concept album all about adventure, travel, and the journey of life – literally and figuratively – encompassing all the stresses and triumphs. Din Of Celestial Birds will be flying beside their new label Big Scary Monsters – celebrating their 25th anniversary as a label this year; home to American Football, Lambrini Girls, Arcane Roots, Love Rarely, Jamie Lenman, Dimscûa, Thank, and many more. »Takeoffs & Landings« will land on August 7th on Vinyl, CD, digital and streaming.

“Din Of Celestial Birds deliver beautiful, elegant and explosive instrumental post-rock; the kind that makes you lay back and close your eyes as you feel your spirit is being ascended.” ~ Everything Is Noise

Since the release of their acclaimed 2023 debut album »The Night Is For Dreamers«, Din Of Celestial Birds have spread their wings even wider, conquering the very UK festivals that they had once dreamed of playing. The Leeds quintet also migrated to dunk!fest in Belgium (subsequently releasing their entire set as a live album) and then found their largest crowd yet at Can Festival in China. These bucket-list performances helped to validate the writing process of »Takeoffs & Landings«. Though some of these songs were being shaped even before their debut album had been released, the band’s very own momentum and frequent driving, flying, loading gear, soundchecking, stopping and starting all seeped into tying the threads of these songs into a unifying concept. “Each song is its own adventure”, confirms guitarist and primary songwriter Andie Gill, “The songs were actually prophetic, as many were written before we went and played those festivals. Though I suppose a gig is an adventure of sorts; one that all the people there get to share with each other, regardless of if they know each other or not.” On a deeper level, »Takeoffs & Landings« reflects the band members’ own comradery, which stretches out to their fans too. A feeling of togetherness, taking on any challenge, and climbing any mountain, embracing all the highs and lows that come with these journeys. “First and foremost,” adds guitarist Tom Hazlehurst, “It always will be just playing music that I enjoy with my friends. So if that’s what we did on the album and we had fun making it, then that’s the main goal achieved.”

The instrumental quintet have chosen to work once again with producer and studio engineer Joe Clayton (also guitarist of Pijn) at his own sonic altar No Studio, a small basement dwelling a stone’s throw from Manchester’s Strangeways Prison. No Studio has been a safe haven and vintage gear heaven for many heavy and experimental bands searching for nuanced layers and brimming textures in their recordings – including Bossk, Conjurer, Mastiff, Pupil Slicer, Wildernesses, Hidden Mothers and many more. Speaking with OST Magazine, “We just love [Joe’s] sounds. He’s as hands-on as you want him to be. We wanted to have his fingerprints a bit more on it because he’s written and produced a lot of really good records.” The band doubled their studio time with Clayton compared to the recording of their debut, fully intending to allow more time for experimenting, playing with sound and finding those off-the-cuff moments without the pressure of the clock. “There’s a lot more synths and double-tracked guitars,” confirms bassist and synth player Matt Benatan. Whilst their debut captured the band’s live sound so well, »Takeoffs & Landings« proves to be a brave step to create a deeper studio album listening experience, unique and independent of the band’s live performances. “There are details that you’re only going to hear on the record,” adds Benatan, “We wanted to lean into the possibilities and use everything we could throw at it.”

“It’s remarkable how quickly and closely [Din Of Celestial Birds] connect with an audience whose heads are still spinning from yesterday’s chaos.” ~ KERRANG!

»Takeoffs & Landings« explodes into life with the title track and leading single, instantly drawing the listener into a widescreen technicolour dreamscape. This catchy number races with a strong pursuing melody that later bursts into a showcase of crunchy riffs. »Marmoris« ebbs and flows like the tides on a glistening sea. The bed of glossy synths lifts up the calm breakdown section before climaxing into the band’s most fearsome moment to date – a dense wall of triple tremolo guitars propelled by blast-beats, like a plane hit with the thunder of turbulence. »From This Summit We Can See The Heavens & Stars« brings down the intensity, finding gloomy, cavernous soundscapes guided by the flare of Matt Benatan’s warm bass groove. Drummer Vince Knight-Schrijver shifts the trajectory through a pounding drum pattern that builds into an enormous and euphoric finale destined to carry across festival crowds. Building intensity and atmosphere with a surging momentum comes so naturally to Din Of Celestial Birds. These songs offer more contrast, twists and turns, showcasing heavier riffs and injecting more energy than ever before; but also finding moments of reflection in the calmer passages.

“No one instrument takes center stage or overstays its welcome. Instead, everything flows together really well, creating that big, sweeping, epic feeling.” ~ Heavy Blog Is Heavy

While many of the songs here bask in a warm and uplifting glow, this record still finds moments of personal reflection. »I Hope That Road Leads You Somewhere Beautiful, Somewhere You Belong« is the album’s most tender offering, written by guitarist Andie Gill in tribute to his partner Roisin who tragically passed away early last year. “She was always my inspiration and my biggest fan,” laments Gill. The song was written with Roisin in mind as a listener, inspired by the couple’s shared dream of driving across Route 66 in a convertible car, embracing the wind blowing on their skin. Though born from a period of immense pain and inner turmoil, the song boasts beautiful harmonies and a lead melody so bright it sounds like the guitars are singing. This standout track is a bittersweet memorial to honour those who have passed on and remember them in the best light. The concept album finishes with a bang and a big riff workout on »Second Star To The Right, And Straight On ‘Til Morning«. The title comes from a Peter Pan quip, but was subsequently quoted by Captain Kirk as his final words in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, smartly signalling the start of the next adventure.

“The goal is that people listening to the album will feel something; either from the experiences they have had that the music evokes, or that the music takes them to new places.” ~ Din Of Celestial Birds

In the album’s spirit of adventure, Din Of Celestial Birds hope the release of »Takeoffs & Landings« will set them soaring on even further journeys together as a band, with more tours and international shows in the pipeline for late 2026 and beyond. »Takeoffs & Landings« will be released on August 7th through Big Scary Monsters handling the UK and EU territories, available on multiple coloured vinyl variants. The album will be simultaneously released by A Thousand Arms in the US and Tomato Records in China. The sleek album cover was designed by Jim Cork (guitarist of Crash Of Rhinos, a fellow Big Scary Monsters band) at Explore Studio. The band were really drawn to Cork’s minimalist geometric designs. He has created art for Slowdive, Editors, Public Service Broadcasting, Alpha Male Tea Party and more. Aside from making multiple appearances at ArcTanGent and Damnation festivals, Din Of Celestial Birds have shared stages with an eclectic array of artists including Explosions In The Sky, Emma Ruth Rundle, Employed To Serve, Ranges, Hundred Year Old Man, Respire, Hidden Mothers, Underdark, and many more. Din Of Celestial Birds will return to ArcTanGent Festival this August, followed by a headlining October UK tour supported by shoegaze darlings Wildernesses.
