Doomed Confessionary: Maya, Adam, Lawrence & Alex (Cold In Berlin)

Formed in London in 2010, Cold In Berlin quickly became a leading light in the capital’s underground scene. Their self-released debut album »Give Me Walls« was an Artrocker magazine album of the year, while Mojo said it was “impossible not to get sucked in by their dark whirlpool of noise” and Loud and Quiet and Q argued over whether singer Maya was the new Patti Smith or Siouxsie Sioux.

Cold In Berlin is gearing up to release their new EP, »The Body Is The Wound«, which will see the light on January 19th, 2024 via New Heavy Sounds.

Can you say a few words about your band?
Adam: Cold In Berlin hail from the four corners of the UK but we are based in London. We’re most comfortable making music that defies definition. Labels like post-punk, goth, and doom have been applied in the past. Sometimes all for one song like our latest single »Spotlight«. Our latest tracks take inspiration from the pounding repetition of Germanic Krautrock. Maya’s lyrics and vocals tend to bind our music with a gothic atmosphere.

What was the biggest challenge for the band this year?
Lawrence: I have some Polish heritage and started learning the language in lockdown. So this year I put it to use and booked a tour in Poland. They were our first shows outside of the UK since Brexit, so it was cool to defy that bollocks and all the supposed hurdles.

What can you be most proud of this year?
Maya: Finally releasing some new music like »Dream One«. We’ve just dropped two tracks from our new EP »The Body Is The Wound«. Two more will be released on 19th January. It marks the beginning of a project we’re calling »Wounds« which will see us continue to experiment with release concepts and formats.
Adam: We’re trying to do something different in response to music streaming services. That model is not good for 90% of artists.

What was your biggest regret?
Alex: In the middle of a UK tour we left some equipment in our vehicle overnight. It was broken into and some gear was stolen. Then we saw that our fans had started a fundraiser to help us out. The community really kept us going and turned the tour around.

What was the best concert/tour this year and why?
Lawrence: Our shows in Kraków and Łódź, Poland were great. Our whole Polish tour was awesome. Great fans who love live music.

What was the biggest surprise on the music scene for you?
Maya: The Black Sabbath ballet. Incredible.
Adam: Fortress Festival was a highlight. Wode, Abduction and Panopticon were awesome.

Where can we see you live next year (concerts/tours)?
Adam: We have a big show at The Dome in London in May. More details to be announced. Then we’re doing a UK tour with Naut, before returning to Poland to play Castle Party festival in July.

What are your plans for the next year as a band? What do you personally want the most?
Maya: Next year is going to be busy. We’ll be recording and releasing our fifth album.
Adam: Peace in the middle east…

Do you already know what are you doing on New Year’s Eve?
Adam: Bad cocktails with good friends.

How can people best support your band?
Adam: Come see us live and shop at our Bandcamp.
