Doomed Confessionary: Tarun Dawar (Tumble)

Tumble is a power trio inspired by the heavy bands of the late 60’s and early 70’s. Their retro hard rock/psychedelic sound is influenced by bands such as Budgie, Blue Cheer, Cactus, MC5, Pentagram and The Groundhogs. Tumble formed in Toronto, Ontario in early 2022. They started out cutting their teeth in the city’s open mic circuit, and quickly began gathering the attention of the local music scene. By the end of 2022, Tumble was opening for bands such as Crown Lands, Ecstatic Vision, and Witchrot.

In January 2023, they caught the attention of legendary Canadian-rock musician/producer, Ian Blurton who agreed to spend a day recording with the band in his studio, ProGold. He managed to capture the band’s live energy, raw power, and ferocious attack in the studio, which resulted in Tumble’s debut EP »Lady Cadaver«, self-released on May 5th, 2023.

Tumble are Liam Deak (guitar, vocals), Tarun Dawar (bass) and Will Adams (drums).

Can you say a few words about your band?
Loud!!!

What was the biggest challenge for the band?
There were definitely inconveniences that we had to overcome, even just finding the right band members with the right chemistry was tough. But looking back on the last 2 years of Tumble we surpassed every goal we set out to accomplish so far. I’m excited to be setting even bigger goals and solving even bigger challenges down the road.

What can you be most proud of so far?
Every jam we’ve had and every show we’ve played. Tumble recently put out a cover of Pentagram’s song »Earth Flight« and their singer, Bobby Liebling, gave us his seal of approval. I was introduced to the album »First Daze Here« when I started playing in bands so that was a big moment for me; for all of us.

What was your biggest regret?
Not having a spare set of strings at a gig. Last year we played a show at the Bovine Sex Club in Toronto and I snapped my A string. Hadn’t broken a bass string in about 8 years prior to that. Luckily another bassist at that gig had a spare one.

What was the best concert/tour so far and why?
We have a blast at every show we play but there’s something special about the crowds in Montreal. They really know how to party.

What was the biggest surprise on the music scene for you?
The stoner rock scene blew up here in the last couple years with some wicked cool people working in that space. Even though Tumble isn’t really a stoner band we ended up playing shows with a lot of those bands when we started out.

What is currently in your heavy musical rotation?
That list can feel endless at times but right now lots of Thin Lizzy, Wishbone Ash, Aerosmith, and Jaco Pastorius.

What was the best advice you’ve ever been given as a musician?
Be open minded. There’s a lot you can learn from everyone.

What are your guilty pleasures?
Cranking up my stereo until I get noise complaints. Being tall. I dunno.

Can you say something more about the music scene in Toronto / Ontario?
The scene is always evolving with new bands forming all the time. You can find a bit of everything here.

Where can we see you live this year (concerts/tours)?
We’re booking more shows across Ontario and Quebec so keep an eye out for those dates.

What are your plans for the future as a band?
Playing shows and having fun. We’re really fortunate to have been able to work with Ian Blurton again on some new recordings. Excited to share and release those!

How can people best support your band?
Check out the shows, listen to the music. Anything really. Plenty of good times to go around.

Do you have any message for your listeners?
Stay funky.
