Dive deeper behind »Roadkill« in this short interview with Aris…

It took almost 6 years to create a new album. Is there a special reason for this?
I think we finished recording the album in 2021. So that makes it 4 years after the release of our debut. As you probably know during and in between 2020 and 2022 we had this annoying lockdown that made it quite difficult to plan and execute things in life. It’s funny when you think that what made the studio and recording engineer available was actually the lockdown as it (unfortunately) gave a lot of free time to people that were working in the concert/live music industry. When the lockdown was lifted our engineer started doing sound for live events again and that made it impossible to mix and master the album quickly since we couldn’t arrange our schedule as he was always working during the weekends and we were working during the week. So we lost some time there. Another reason is that we didn’t feel the need to rush with the release of the album since we wanted to find a label or partner that would like to cooperate with us in a way that would benefit the band. Hope that explains a bit why it took so much time for the second album to be released.

What was the creative process like this time compared to the previous album »Opium For The Masses«?
I guess it was pretty much the same. We like to get all the three of us in the rehearsal room and jam on ideas from which later songs are created. We play the music we would like to hear ourselves and simply let it flow from ourselves. It’s basically our emotions channeled through musical instruments into songs.

This time your bassist/vocalist Medo was in charge of mixing and mastering. Why didn’t you make this move earlier?
If I’m not mistaken this wasn’t really the idea in the beginning. When we started the mixing process with the engineer (Žan Brešan, Ostudio6) Medo was sitting there with him all the time and was very specific about the sound he or we wanted to achieve so as time went by he basically mixed and mastered the whole album without really planning on it before. Even though he had some experience before this was a learning experience for him and I guess he’ll do more of it in the future.

I know the album is still quite fresh but how are you satisfied with the final product?
We are satisfied with the album and its final form. Like you said it is still quite fresh but at the same time it is kind of in the past now and we need to think about the next album instead of second guessing our recent release. Let’s be clear, if we didn’t like the album we wouldn’t have it released. We didn’t have any contractual obligation or anything of that kind to record and publish the album hahaha. So yes, we are satisfied with the final product and we’ll try our best to make the next album at least as good as this one if not better. Stay tuned to find out if we’ll manage it.

Are there any particular songs on the album that you would like to highlight?
We make by design albums that aren’t too long and don’t have too many songs in its tracklist. The idea is to keep the attention of the listener and make it possible to enjoy all of the songs in one go. So to answer your question I’d like to highlight all of the six songs on the album.

For »Roadkill« you teamed up with Mario from Croatian independent label No Profit Recordings. Were you familiar with his previous work?
Not really. I was familiar with the tribute to Satan Panonski compilation he did but wasn’t really aware of the label behind the release. We got in contact with Mario by coincidence when we were shooting emails to each other about some possible gigs. When I realized what kind of organization he is running (label and booking) and got to know him and Dina (she is part of the organization with Mario) and really liked their attitude I asked them if they would be interested in cooperating with us, he said yes and the rest is history, for now.

You have already received a bunch of excelent reviews. Which one warmed your hearts the most?
Pretty much all of the reviews were really positive so they all warmed our hearts. Some weren’t in english or our native language and I had to use google translate to find out if they’re positive or not and it warmed my heart when through that process it always turned out to be positive. We obviously don’t write and record music thinking about possible reviews but this kind of positive response really pumps up the band in the right way and motivates you to keep on going doing what you love. Another good thing is that through these nice reviews we got a lot of exposure and reached people we otherwise wouldn’t be able. So keep ’em coming.

Are there maybe any leftover songs that didn’t make it to the album?
No really in that sense. We have a lot of ideas, riffs, jams that didn’t make it to the album even since the demo days. It might happen that some will be used in the future.

You intensively promoted the new album last month supporting The Winery Dogs, Ufomammut, Hippie Death Cult and Lucifungus. Where can we see you in the future?
Almost. Sadly we had to cancel the 3 dates we had with Hippie Death Cult since one of our members got pretty ill and was bedridden for a couple weeks. In 2024 we’ll try to play as much as possible. That’s the plan always. There is a European tour in the works but it’s far from being booked. If you want to be sure about our gigs be sure to check our social media or bandcamp. And if you would like us to play in your city, invite us or get a promoter to do it.

What were your guilty pleasures this year at least when it comes to music?
Man… I got into Marina And The Diamonds like 10 years too late.

How can people best support Omega Sun?
By sending us large amounts of money on a daily basis. No but really, if you like the band and you would like to support us check out our bandcamp merch store and see if there is anything you like and buy it. If we play a gig in your area, show up!!!

What are your plans for the next year?
Play as much as possible and make new music. Thank you Bojan for supporting us and giving us the precious space in your zine so that we can reach more people, greatly appreciated. See you soon!
