Polish post-sludge/stoner band Optical Sun premiere new album »Diabeł« (eng. “Devil”), featuring samples from art horror movies and poetry!

The album contains speaking samples from the film »Diabeł« by A. Żuławski and poems by Kazimierz Ratoń and Zbigniew Jerzyna.
Optical Sun play stoner/post-sludge/doom metal. The band’s trademarks include samples and visuals from old Polish films, including Jerzy Łukaszewicz’s »Przyjaciel Wesołego Diabła« (Friend of the Merry Devil) and the 1936 film »Pan Twardowski«, interwoven with powerful guttural vocals and double bass lines.
»Diabeł« (eng. “Devil) is an unusual album that combines three elements: music, cinema and poetry. Optical Sun’s fundament is music. The band plays a genre not widely practiced, post-sludge metal. This is further enhanced by the use of two bass guitars. Michał Pijocha (Moonstone, Belzebong) handled the mixing and mastering of the album, having a key influence on its sound, giving it the right dynamics and character.
A key element of the album »Diabeł« is the use of spoken-word samples from Andrzej Żuławski’s films »Diabeł« (a cult classic art horror movie) and Marek Piestrak’s series »Przyłbice i Hoody« (adapted from Kazimierz Korkozowicz’s novel). The band received permission to use elements from Żuławski’s film from the son of legendary artist – Xawery Żuławski, himself a renowned filmmaker.
“In our case, film samples are a structural element of the song, not just an additional element.” says the band Optical Sun about their album »Diabeł«. “All our albums are connected by the motif of samples and the exploration of the way the Devil is portrayed in Polish films – hence the earlier »Przygody Wesołego Diabła« and »Pan Twardowski«.”

The third layer of Optical Sun’s album »Diabeł«, as well as the band’s entire oeuvre, is poetry. In addition to their own lyrics, as in the songs »Strach«, »Z Głębi Ran«, and »Spowiedź Oszukanego«, the compositions feature poems by the forgotten polish poet Kazimierz Ratoń and Zbigniew Jerzyna, among others.
Optical Sun writes about Kazimierz Ratoń’s poetry and its use on the album: “His poetry perfectly reflects the dark side of human existence, it is full of suffering and despair. At the same time, a certain wisdom of a man afflicted by all manner of illnesses and impenetrable pain shines through. The poet is like a biblical Job crying out to God, like Jesus scourged and nailed to the cross. Here, the poet’s words fuse with our trance sounds and become like a pained mantra.”
The album also features the exceptional track »Gasnące Kolory« a radio drama written to the melody of the track »Strach« (eng. ‘Fear’), which serves as a sort of loop in the album’s structure. The new material sees the band continue their experiments with blending intense vocals with spoken-word samples from films, creating a modern, emotional sound.
“We’d like to encourage listeners to try and experience our album »Diabeł« in many different ways. Sometimes focusing on the music, sometimes on the lyrics and the movie samples that complement them. It may not be a happy album, even though we are happy people – but this fact comes across as our reflection on the bitter of life” says Optical Sun about the album »Diabeł«.

The band Optical Sun has announced their next album, which will be a concept album based on an old Polish fairy tale, the name of which has taken on a completely new meaning over the years.
Optical Sun stands out on for their unusual approach to instrumentation – they play with two basses, one serving as a rhythm guitar and the other as a solo instrument. Their discography include the 2018 EP »Optical Sun« and the 2021 album »Save Our Souls« released by Via Nocturna and recorded at Monochrom Studio with the help of the Satanic Audio crew.
The members of Optical Sun played for over a decade in the punk project Panta Koina. They also played alongside bands such as Turbo, KSU, Weird Tales, Taxi Caveman, Neon Mud, Weedcraft, Toń, Gravity Eater, and Sexy Cutts.
